Leadership...  what a concept!
Here's another....   service.

I can't remember when a candidate struck me with his (or her) desire to be of service.
Its all about self-aggrandizement and ego.

Open Letter to Nancy Pelosi on her visit to Tibet

This email was sent to Speaker Pelosi and my representative from Georgia. Below it is the response from my congressman. I've not yet heard from Speaker Pelosi ...

Speaker Pelosi...

Although you do not represent me directly, as Speaker of the House, you have a fundamental set of responsibilities that affects the entire United States and thus, me.

Your role as speaker DOES NOT include foreign policy. You have wandered (or should I say blundered) into this arena several times with the most recent being your comments over Tibet. Although I am sure that political freedom in both Tibet and China is far from the freedoms we enjoy here, IT IS NOT YOUR PLACE to publicly perform foreign policy no matter what you believe.
You are welcome to debate my opinion and you are welcome to do what you desire as a private citizen, but I did not ELECT you to perform the duties that are part of the executive branch and the state department.
Thank You for allowing me to voice my opinion.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for contacting me regarding Speaker Nancy Pelosi's recent comments concerning China-Tibet relations.  I sincerely appreciate the benefit of your views.

In 1789, President George Washington realized that it would be necessary to create an Executive Branch department in charge of managing the country's foreign affairs.  Congress quickly approved the Department of State, making it the first federal agency.  President Washington then named Thomas Jefferson as the first Secretary of State, and charged him with the duty of leading the United States' foreign affairs.  Today, the Department of State is still in charge of negotiating foreign policy with other countries, under the direction of President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.  The volatile situation in China has been a focus on this administration, particularly with the 2008 Olympics fast approaching.

In March 2008, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, of San Francisco, took a trip to Tibet where she met with the Dalai Lama, and bemoaned the "oppression" of the Chinese.  I believe this trip supersedes the authority given to the Speaker of the House.  Speaker Pelosi is not a diplomat, nor is she the Ambassador to China.  The Speaker is not authorized to set foreign policy, and she certainly should not undermine the Department of State's sensitive negotiations with such a volatile foreign government.  I find her actions appalling, and I will do whatever I can to keep Speaker Pelosi from undercutting Department of State negotiations.

I support the Department of State's ability to set United States foreign policy, and believe that President Bush and Secretary of State Rice are dealing with China properly.  Members of Congress should not undermine the President's foreign policy just to score cheap political points.  I believe Speaker Pelosi's comments will hurt our relations with China, in a time when diplomatic negotiations are strained.

Hearing the views of all Georgians gives me the opportunity to better understand how important issues could impact the people of Georgia and the future interests of the nation.  In that regard, your input is most helpful.

Lunar Eclipse - Feb 21 2008

Had a wonderful view of the total lunar eclipse Thursday night. It was quite the event as several of the neighbors come out with their children to witness this event.

I couldn't help but visualize early homo sapiens looking up and wondering what the heck was going on!

We were very lucky that the cloud cover that was obscuring the sky broke completely at the right hour.

A couple of my photo's came out ok... I'll have to learn allot more about night shooting and definitely needed the tripod.

Memphis visit and Tornadoes

On Tuesday, Feb 5th, a really nasty line of storms stretched from Ohio to the gulf coast and when it was over, the damage and fatalities were scattered across multiple states. Our prayers go out to those that have lost loved ones and need the strength to carry on.

The power of nature always amazes me and while I was driving back home Saturday morning, I noticed several pieces of roofing up in trees so I pulled into the business park and took the following pictures.  Memphis_20080209_0017

It was striking how perfect the weather turned the next day.
The Mississippi River has much historical significance for the region and the country. The banks of the Mississippi in Memphis have been made into a nice park area for the locales and tourists to walk, jog or just gaze at this great river.

Politics- I hate talking about this BUT

Just an observation and an opinion. -

It almost doesn't matter who end's up in the white house if the senate and the house of representatives can't do two important things.

Stay out of my wallet.

Stay out of my bedroom.

It is incumbent upon our representatives to actually consider the concept of leadership.

Frequent communications with those that represent us in Washington, in your state and in your local community is one of the keys to using your privilege to vote to actually express your opinion.

AND, if you don't vote, then you really don't get to complain.

Weekend at Sound and Speed in Nashville

NashvilleSandS_20080112_0007 Pat and I traveled up to Nashville to attend the annual Sound and Speed meet and greet and concert. The event was held on Saturday January 12th.

We had a chance to meet and get autographs from Richard and Kyle Petty as well as Wayne Taylor, the driver of the SunTrust # 10 GP car.

The Petty's started a camp for kids with healthcare needs called Victory Junction. All of the concert proceeds were donated to this charity.

The evening itself was topped by a concert by Alan Jackson. After the concert, Pat and I walked over to the night club BB Kings for a little live Jazz music. I recommend a visit to Nashville to all!

Snow in Fayetteville Jan 08

January 19th 2008. A low pressure area formed in the Gulf of Mexico and swept moisture into the North Georgia area. Snowfall in Georgia that accumulates is unusual so it became quite the media event with continuous coverage from about 9am through 6pm on Saturday.

Rather humorous for a person that grew up with snow, deep snow but many folks in this region have never seen snow let alone build a snowman. There were many built on nearly every yard across the area.ATL_Snow_jan08_0202

It was a great day for photography. In fact, one of the Atlanta TV stations opened up their web site for folks to send Snow pictures. Our neighborhood in Fayetteville, has a lake area that really highlighted the snowfall. The photo on the right is the wooden walkway on the lake after about an hour of precipitation. The one below is a shot across the lake of the gazebo and landing that are built on the damn.

We were very lucky that it was Saturday. If this were a work day, it would have been difficult to coax people out of the comfort and 'safety' of their homes. We all have noticed that people forget how to drive in the rain, well here, they don't drive, heck they don't even walk in the snow. Most restaurants closed or never opened and most of the area churches announced that they would simply be closed for services the next day. As it turned out, Sunday was in fact a cold but sunny day. All in all, a rather pleasant day as most of the TV coverage were of people enjoying themselves and children and adults fashioning makeshift sleighs to slide down the nearest hill.
